Professional Details

I hold a PhD in Information Science from the University of North Texas, Denton. My dissertation, entitled Bridging the Theory-to-Practice Gap: a Multivariate Correlational Study Exploring the Effects of a Graduate Online Learning Environment As a Community of Practice Framework, considers how we can foster a community of practice mindset with graduate-level online courses that have a practical focus. My teaching approach is that of partner, mentor, and facilitator of learning.

My teaching and research areas focus on the areas of storytelling, information behavior, and online learning. Specifically, I consider the role of storytelling as a communication and information assimilation tool in our everyday lives, as well as a tool for teaching and learning, management, content marketing, branding, knowledge management, and knowledge transfer.

I have been teaching online and building online courses and implementing them through Blackboard Learn and Canvas since 2007. I have face-to-face teaching experience at Tarleton State University, where I taught Freshman English and, later, Business Computer Information Systems courses. I also work as a freelance copyeditor, focusing on professional, scholarly, and academic writing.

My teaching philosophy is that of being a facilitator of education. My teaching presence is as a partner - and often, mentor - in students' learning. My class environment and content development are influenced by the Community of Inquiry framework and a Community of Practice approach. My methodology is to create engaging, objective-driven content that allows students to assimilate and apply concepts and techniques in a manner that is both sense-making and contextual to them professionally and personally. My classes utilize writing in the disciplines concepts to introduce students to relevant professional writing and help them develop skills for writing in varied rhetorical situations. Assignments largely are project based so that participants can create content for immediate professional use or can explore areas of interest. Students are encouraged to create work for use in employment portfolios and for future publication.
